The Metro East Bears continued their undefeated streak through the American Legion playoffs on Wednesday by defeating Murphysboro 7-5 in the Fifth Division playoffs in Carmi.
The Bears improved to 23-6 with the victory and will play Friday at noon in the finals of the Fifth Division playoffs against an opponent to be determined.
Jordan Hovey hit a pair of solo homers and narrowly missed a third to pace the offense. Hovey also had a double in a three-hit performance. He was the only Bears' batter to compile more than one hit. They had eight as a team.
Connor Melton worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth on the hill to help secure the victory. Ben Cusac picked up the win on the mound, working seven innings while scattering 10 hits, walking five and fanning one. He allowed five runs, four earned in the win.
