Area grapplers descended on the Jackie Joyner Kersee Center in East St. Louis Feb. 27 for one of the Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation South Regionals.
Youth wrestlers matched against similar age and weight competitors in the Tot (6 and under), Bantam (7-8), Intermediate (8-10), Novice (10-12) and Senior (13-14) divisions were on hand, with the Intermediate, Novice and Senior division wrestling for a chance to qualify for sectionals next weekend. For the Tot and Bantam competitors, IKWF wrestling ends this weekend regardless of finish.
Youth wrestlers from the following clubs were invited to compete: Alton Little Redbirds Club, Bethalto Bulls Wrestling Club, Carlyle Wrestling Club, East St. Louis Wrestling Club, Freeburg Blue Range Wrestling Club, Granite City Wrestling Association, Highland Bulldog Junior Wrestling Club, Jacksonville Area Wrestling, Jersey Junior Panthers Wrestling, Junior Comanche Wrestling Club, MC Bulldog Wrestling Club, O’Fallon Little Panther Wrestling Club, Raider Wrestling Club, Saukee Youth Wrestling Club, Team Mascoutah Wrestling Club and Wrestling 365.
The Bethalto Bulls led a strong field, finishing first place in the Tot and Novice division and placing third in the Bantam and Senior Division on its way capturing the overall championship at the South Regional.
The Bulls were paced by 13 first-place finishes on the day. Chase Collman (Tot), Hudson Potter (Bantam), Vincent Moore (Intermediate), Colton Carlisle (Novice), Dylan Dublo (Novice), Bryce Griffin (Novice), Caleb Tyus (Novice), Caine Tyus (Novice), Abraham Wojcikiewicz (Novice), Zachary Griffth (Novice), Vinny Zerban (Senior), Peyton Bechtold (Senior), and Brady Christeson (Senior) all won Regional titles.
The Bulls also had eight second-place winners in Jayden Minner (Tot), Hayes Potter (Tot), Ayden Wesley (Bantam), James Wojcikewicz (Bantam), Brock Barrows (Novice), Connor House (Novice), Briley Christeson (Senior) and Tyler Brooks (Senior).
Zachary Vanevord (Tot), Hudson Wesley (Tot), Brody Johnson (Tot), Braden Rayner (Tot), Colin Hoffman (Tot), Mason Shaw (Tot), Jacob Cranford (Bantam), Joshua Crandford (Bantam) and Gavyn Irvin (Novice) all finished third place for the Bulls.
Lucas Mack (Tot), Kaden Witsken (Tot), Riley Short (Bantam), Mason Bryant (Bantam), Anthony Michelon (Bantam), Drake Champlain (Intermediate), Kale Patterson (Intermediate), Zeke Rhodes (Intermediate), Hayden Moore (Intermediate), Abigail Rhodes (Novice), Alexander Miranda (Novice), Gavin Witsken (Senior), McKenzie Staggs (Senior) and Justis Sine (Senior) placed fourth for the Bulls.
The Bulls also were represented by Shay Westoff (Intermediate), Levi Wilkinson (Intermediate), Jimmie Franklin (Novice) and Brody Newberry (Senior).
The top four place winners in the Intermediate, Novice and Senior divisions all advance to the sectional Saturday, March 5, at Highland High School.
