SHELLS OVERWHELM VANDALIA — Zach Golenor scored a season-best 28 points as Roxana walloped Vandalia, 77-58, on Tuesday at Larry Milazzo Gym and improved to 19-9.
The Shells lifted their South Central Conference record to 6-2 and clinched second place behind champ Greenville. Roxana concludes its regular-season slate Friday at Hillsboro in its SCC finals.
"We shot it really well and we defended well," Roxana coach Mark Briggs said. "I think it's the first time this season that we have had four players score in double figures."
Chance Foss pitched in 18 points, Trace Gentry netted 17 points and Blake Vandiver punched in 12 points to spur Roxana’s offense. Gentry sank 3 treys to establish a school record with 249 of them. Jarrod White held the old mark with 248.
As a team, the Shells have hit 182 treys this season to equal a school record.
EXPLORERS BOW TO HAWKS — Host Gibault started quickly and zipped by Marquette, 64-38, in a nonconference game. The Hawks, who led 21-12 at the end of the first quarter and 33-15 at half, raised their record to 19-9.
Marquette, which sank to 18-8, welcomes Freeburg tonight and Breese Central on Friday in its final regular-season games.
“Gibault is a tough matchup for us and they shot well,” Explorers’ coach Steve Medford said of the Hawks. “We didn’t play very well.”
Shandon Boone’s 10 points were best for the Explorers.
Brian Deterding’s 21 points led Gibault, which opened a 54-24 lead after three quarters. The Hawks made 25 of 47 shots, including 9 of 18 treys.
KNIGHTS POUND OILERS — Host Metro East Lutheran shot in front 27-1 against East Alton-Wood River en route to a 58-32 Prairie State Conference victory at Thomas Hooks Gym on Tuesday.
The Knights, who had a 23-0 run, pushed their record to 23-5. The Oilers dropped to 6-21. Blake Marks’ 19 points paced EA-WR. Teammate Luke Westbrook added 6 points for the Oilers, who welcome Greenville on Friday in its final regular-season home game and senior night. The Oilers then play Saturday at Valmeyer.

WARRIORS CAGE PANTHERS — Host Granite City raced past O’Fallon, 65-44, in a Southwestern Conference game at Memorial Gym.
The Warriors improved to 13-11 overall and 6-5 in the Southwestern Conference. O’Fallon fell to 7-16 and 2-9. They led 32-19 at half and 42-33 after three quarters.
Tra' Allen’s 22 points and 7 rebounds spurred the Warriors. Kenny Berry collected 21 points, 8 steals and 3 assists. Jake Roustio contributed 10 points and 4 assists.
“We played well in spurts,” Granite City coach Steve Roustio said. “Kenny Berry got a lot of points in transition and Tra' Allen had a great game.”
Ronald Anthony’s 11 points led O’Fallon, 7-16 overall and 2-9 in the conference.
Edwardsville, meanwhile, clinched a tie for the SWC title by defeating Collinsville, 57-54, in overtime at Vergil Fletcher Gym.
The Tigers, 20-4 overall and 11-0 in the SWC, play Friday at Alton, which is 12-8 overall and 8-3 in the conference.
