ALTON — The Marquette Catholic Explorers earned a lopsided shutout victory over the East Alton-Wood River Oilers on Wednesday night at Gordon Moore Park behind a powerhouse performance from senior forward Zach Weinman.
Weinman tallied four goals in the 5-0 win. The senior has now netted 16 goals this season.
“My teammates set me up tonight,” Weinman said. “We just played really well as a team. It could have been anyone, we were just playing really well.”
The forward said both Chris Hartrich and Noah Fahnestock gave him quality passes. The victory extends the Explorers winning streak to three matches, as they defeated Belleville Althoff 6-2 on Monday and Roxana 8-0 on Tuesday. Marquette’s offense has produced 20 goals this week.
“It’s been a good week this week,” Weinman said. “I think it’s really important going into the playoffs at the end of the season to stay confident and keep playing our best.”
From the beginning, the Explorers challenged the Oilers. In the first 20 minutes of the first half, Marquette kept the ball on EA-WR’s side of the field, accumulating five shots on goal.
“When we play well together, we execute,” Marquette coach Jeremy Sanfilippo said. “When they’re having fun and playing together, they execute on the field. The field, the way it is right now (conditions) is giving us problems, but I think once they relax, they go out and play the game.”
Weinman scored his first goal at the 20:48 mark. Just feet from the goal, he knocked the ball in with his left foot. The goal marked the 50th goal of his varsity career.
“Zach saw the opportunity and he went to the goal,” Sanfilippo said. “He did it on three occasions where he had the vision to go between the defense and to the goal.”
The forward struck again at the 25:88 mark with another score just feet from the goal to make the score 2-0 Marquette. His third goal came at the 32:50 mark when he scored on a shot off of his left foot to give the Explorers a three-goal advantage.
Less than a minute after Weinman’s third goal, forward Hartrich scored on a shot just feet from the goal. The Explorers led 4-0 at halftime.
Weinman scored his fourth goal on a header with 29:05 left to go in the game. The Oilers were missing players due to injuries and others didn’t finish due to injury. Neither C.J. Johnson nor Sebastian Ledesma finished the game due to injury.
Jett Sims, Ethan Moore, Zac Lafferty and goalkeeper D.J. Redden also didn't play because of injury.
“Our goal is to be healthy,” EA-WR head coach Mike Lawson said. “Our goal is to finish the season in health so we go in next Tuesday into the regionals and go from there.”
The Explorers improved to 10-5-2 with the win. The Oilers dropped to 10-9 with the loss.
Marquette will return to action at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 11 in an away contest against Columbia. The Oilers will play at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at home against Gillespie, before delving into the Class 1A postseason against Metro East Lutheran at 6 p.m. on Oct. 11 at Greenville.
