The Edwardsville Tigers and the Marquette Catholic Explorers will look to add another regional title to their trophy cases this year.
The Tigers will play in the Class 3A Granite City Regional and the Explorers head to Columbia to play in the Class 2A regional tournament.
Seedings and pairings for the Class 2A and 3A postseason were announced on Friday. Edwardsville is seeded first in sub-sectional B of the Peoria Notre Dame Sectional and Marquette is the No. 6 seed in sub-sectional A of the Waterloo Sectional.
Alton and Granite City join Edwardsville in the Class 3A Granite City Regional.
Civic Memorial will play in the Class 2A Jacksonville Regional tournament.
Four area schools – Roxana, East Alton-Wood River, Metro-East Lutheran and Father McGivney – are in Class 1A competition. Roxana, EA-WR and Metro-East Lutheran are playing regionals in Greenville and Father McGivney heads to Freeburg.
Edwardsville has won four straight regional titles and nine in the last 10 years. Marquette is looking to win its second straight regional crown.
The Tigers will play either seventh-seeded Granite City or ninth-seeded Pekin in the Class 3A regional semifinals at 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 18.
Granite City and Pekin will square off in a first-round match. The time and site of the contest have yet to be determined.
Last year, the Tigers won the Edwardsville Regional championship, beating O’Fallon 2-1 in the title game.
This year, Edwardsville is 3-0-2 against its sub-sectional opponents, beating Belleville East, Collinsville and O’Fallon and tying Alton and Granite City.
Alton is the No. 5 seed in the Granite City Regional and will play Collinsville at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 18 in the semifinals. The Redbirds, who are 2-2-1 against their sub-sectional opponents, will play the Kahoks in a regular season match on Oct. 13 at Collinsville.
Alton, which last won a regional title in 2005, lost to Quincy 3-1 in the Class 3A Quincy Regional semifinals a year ago.
The Warriors are hosting regionals for the first time since 2012. Granite City, which hasn’t won a regional since 2002, lost to Collinsville 4-0 in the Class 3A Quincy Regional semifinals last fall.
Marquette will play Mascoutah in a first-round match of the Columbia Regional. The time and site have yet to be determined.
If the Explorers beat the Indians, they will advance to play another Mississippi Valley Conference team -- Waterloo -- at 5 p.m. on Oct. 19 in the regional semifinals. Waterloo is the top seed in sub-sectional A of the Waterloo Sectional.
Last year, Marquette won its first regional title since 2012 after beating Glenwood 1-0 in the Class 2A Jacksonville Regional championship game.
CM also played in the Jacksonville Regional in 2015 and lost to Taylorville 3-2 in penalty kicks in a first-round match.
This year’s Eagles are seeded eighth and will face second-seeded Jacksonville at 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 18 in a semifinal match at Jacksonville. The winner plays either Highland or Jersey in the title match on Oct. 22.
EA-WR is seeded third in sub-sectional B of the Class 1A Gibault Sectional and will play sixth-seeded Metro-East Lutheran at 6 p.m. on Oct. 11 in a semifinal match of the Greenville Regional.
The Oilers are looking to win their second regional title in three years. Last year, EA-WR beat MELHS 3-2 in a Greenville Regional semifinal match before losing to Althoff in the finals.
Roxana, seeded ninth, will play seventh-seeded Greenville at 4 p.m. on Oct. 7 in a first-round match at Greenville. Last year, the Shells lost 5-0 to Greenville in a first-round match.
Father McGivney is the No. 5 seed and will play fourth-seeded Freeburg in the semifinals of the Class 1A Freeburg Regional. Last year, the Griffins fell 3-1 to Lebanon in a first-round match in the Gibault Regional.
