Roxana’s Anna Whitaker goes to the hoop over Breese Central’s Sophie Rickhoff.
The hopes for the Roxana Lady Shells to advance deeper into the regional tournament, held at East Alton-Wood River’s Memorial Gym, was cut short Tuesday evening by Breese Central in round two by a score of 84-30.
Redemption was the tone set the night before by the Shells when they topped the Marquette Catholic Explorers in the first round.
“Redemption is definitely a good word,” Roxana coach Tammy Talbert said when describing their win over the Explorers Feb. 10. “They beat us by double digits last time we played them and they took us out in regionals a couple years ago.”
The Shells hoped to advance to the finals, but they had to face the 27-0 Breese Central Lady Cougars first. Central beat the Warriors both times in conference play, 76-31 at Wesclin on Dec. 19 and 62-25 a little over a week ago at home.
Junior Madisyn Sheraka led the Shells with 20 points while senior Anna Whitaker contributed five points.
For Breese Central, sophomore Kendra Wilken led the Cougars with 21 points while senior Madison Timmerman added 19 points. Last year the Cougars were eliminated in the first round of sectionals by Nashville.
Breese Central, the No. 2 team in the state in 2A, will face Cahokia Conference Mississippi Division rival Trenton-Wesclin at 7 p.m. Thursday at EA-WR's Memorial Gym in the regional championship.
