CM SCOOTS BY JERSEY — The Civic Memorial Eagles squared off with a familiar rival on Wednesday at the Carrollton Hawks Invitational, defeating the Jersey Panthers 59-45.
The No.2 seeded Eagles led 30-24 at halftime on their way to the quarterfinal victory. They improved to 18-5 overall with the win and will meet West Central at 8 p.m. tonight in the semifinals at Carrollton. West Central bested Brussels 62-48 on Wednesday to earn its way to the semis.
The other semifinal game tonight will take place at 6:30 p.m. and pit top-seeded Calhoun against No. 5 North Greene.
Against Jersey, CM was led by sophomore Allie Troeckler's 25 points and six steals. Alaira Tyus added nine points and Journey Coffman chipped in with eight points for good measure.
The other game scheduled for tonight at 5 p.m. is between Jacksonville Routt and Greenfield in the consolation bracket. The winner of that game advanced to face Metro East Lutheran, which beat Granite City 45-44 in consolation play on Wednesday.
Marquette Catholic and Brussels will meet at 6 p.m. Friday, with Jersey and Carrollton playing at 7:30 p.m. The winners of those games will battle at 3:30 p.m. Saturday for fifth place. The championship game is set for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
ALTON TAKES DOWN BELLEVILLE EAST — The Alton Redbirds traveled to Belleville East on Wednesday to close out their Southwestern Conference portion of the season with a 51-15 win over the Lancers.
Alton improved to 18-6 overall on the season with the win and 4-3 in the SWC.
Without the services of state ranked twins Nicholas DeLoach (145) and Phyllip DeLoach (152), the Birds were still able to soar to victory. Qiant'e Wagner, ranked No. 10 at 160 pounds, bumped up to 170 to face Matt Striegel of East also, ultimately losing 7-6 after a late flurry by Striegel.
Pins from Darian Pierson (285) and Nijel Ward (106) helped spark AHS, which charged out to a 27-0 lead.
Next up for the Redbirds is a dual at 6 p.m. tonight at Roxana.
