EDWARDSVILLE – Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's basketball coach Paula Buscher has announced the addition of two players for next season.
Donshel Beck of St. Louis and Sidney Smith of Carterville have signed national letters of intent and will continue their basketball careers for the Cougars.
Beck, a 5-foot-9 guard, averaged 21.5 points per game her senior season while setting both the career scoring record with 1,457 points and the single-season record with 511 points at Ritenour High School. A two-time first team Suburban North All-Conference selection, Beck earned multiple All-Tournament team awards as well as being a two-time Ritenour Most Valuable Player.
"She is a tough competitor and has a great passion for the game," Buscher said. "Donshel brings athleticism along with a physical style of play that will allow her to make an easy transition into the college game."
Smith, a 5-8 guard, averaged 20 points per game, including 130 treys in her senior campaign at Carterville High School. Her career 3-pointers rank her fourth all-time in Illinois High School Association history for a single season. A second-team All-State selection, Smith helped Carterville to a River to River Conference Championship and a 27-4 record.
"Sidney not only can light it up from deep three-point range, but she can also come off screens and does a great job of reading the defense," Buscher said.
"Both Sidney and Donshel are outstanding people who excel on the court and in the classroom," Buscher said. "They will bring much-needed depth to our perimeter positions, and we are proud to have them join our Cougar family."
Smith and Beck will join Erin Kelly of Pontiac and Gwen Adams of St. Louis as newcomers on the Cougar roster for next season.
