EDWARDSVILLE – SIUE improved its Ohio Valley Conference men's tennis record to 3-1 Friday with a 4-0 victory over Tennessee State at the SIUE Tennis Courts.
The Cougars, which improved to 8-12 overall, announced their next match Saturday against Belmont will be played indoors due to poor weather conditions expected. The match time has been rescheduled to take place after the SIUE-Belmont women's tennis match and is expected to start at approximately 5:30 p.m. at the Edwardsville Y.
SIUE started strong by winning the doubles point. Tristan Houle and Patrick Gaffigan bested Amir Daniel and Grant Maddox at No. 2 singles 6-1. Jack Desse and Matthew Hutchinson clinched the double point with a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles over Kyle Burton and Daniel Bernal.
Nico Kuehn was the first to finish for the Cougars with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Daniel at No. 6 singles.
Kuehn said the Cougars were prepared for the heavy wind Friday afternoon at the SIUE Tennis Courts.
"We tried to do long balls and not go for too much," said Kuehn. "We had to be patient. I think it helped a lot that we were prepared for that mentally."
Desse made it 3-0 Cougars when he finished his match over Maddox 6-1, 7-5. Gaffigan scored the winning point for the team with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 win over Jorge Rodriguez.
Hutchinson and Dan Lineberry also were within reach of scoring the final point. Hutchinson had two match points and was up 40-15 in his No. 2 singles match with Shashank Nautiyal before the match was clinched for SIUE.
"This was a match we knew we had to play well," said Hutchinson. "The conditions weren't ideal, but we knew we had to take care of business."
Tennessee State fell to 7-11 overall and 0-5 in the OVC.
