East Alton-Wood River's Steven White tangles with Marquette Captain No. 24 Collin Arcynski.
You could hear East Alton-Wood River sophomore Blake Weishaupt from the Oiler penalty box as he announced his prediction for the outcome of Tuesday night’s 1A playoff game.
“Here’s your headline: Oilers advance after heated battle with Marquette,” he said, smiling at his Marquette counterpart in the visitors penalty box.
The Mississippi Valley Club Hockey Association’s class 1A playoff game pitted the Marquette Explorers against the Oilers for the third time in the playoff series Tuesday in another heated game at the East Alton Ice Rink, with 28 combined minutes in the penalty box between the teams.
“They are one of those teams where you just want the win,” EA-WR forward Seth Chester said of Tuesday night’s win. “You know they’ve been beating us for so many years, it’s great to cancel their run on the playoffs.”
The Explorers set the tone early in the first period with a goal by sophomore Ian Sovar, assisted by Zach Hunter. The Oilers answered back quickly with a pair of goals. EA-WR forward Alec Revelle scored at 6:52 and forward Steven White made it 2-0 at 1:04.
The second period took a different direction. At 8:35, with tempers mounting, Marquette Explorers Coaches John Dumoulin and Larry Ulrich were ejected from the arena by officials for voicing their disagreement on penalties.
The Oilers added a goal at 5:31 in the second period by defenseman Cole Ford. EA-WR’s Alec Revelle finished the offense for the Oilers in the third period with his second goal of the night at 7:35, making the final score 4-1.
Oilers coach Tim Weishaupt already is in planning mode for their meeting with Highland.
“They have a strong defense and we need to work on our power play and controlling the puck,” Weishaupt said. “We did better tonight, but we need to work on that.”
The Oilers advance to the second round to face Highland on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, Feb. 24, Feb. 25 and Feb. 27, at 7:15 p.m. at the East Alton Ice Arena.
