The East Alton-Wood River Oilers welcomed Metro East Lutheran to Memorial Gym on Wednesday for a Prairie State Conference game, but unfortunately the outcome didn't end in their favor.
EA-WR came up a little short, being edged out 42-40 by the Knights. A late charge by the Oilers wasn't enough to overcome an early deficit to MELHS.
With the loss EA-WR dipped to 4-19 overall and 0-5 in the PSC on the season, while Metro improved to 12-11 and 1-4 on the league slate.
The Oilers owned a 12-11 lead after one quarter Wednesday, but trailed 23-17 at the break and 35-25 after three quarters. They erupted to outscore the Knights 15-7 in the fourth quarter, but the comeback was a little too late.
Brandi Lacey paced EA-WR with 11 points, while Kari Westbrook chipped in with 10. Abby Yurchuk netted 11 points to guide MELHS in the victory.
Next up for the Oilers is Senior Night at 7:30 p.m. tonight at home vs. Brussels.
They enter the playoffs at 7:30 p.m. Monday, facing rival Roxana in the Class 2A Carlyle Regional. The winner advances to play second-seeded Wesclin at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Carlyle. The regional championship game is on the docket for 7 p.m. Thursday.
