The Civic Memorial Eagles football squad traveled to Tennessee to take part in a 7-on-7 regional tournament July 11-12 and came away with a second-place finish.
The Eagles were the only Illinois team entered in the competition, facing squads from Tennessee and Alabama. They ultimately fell to the defending champion Hillsboro Burros in the finals by the score of 26-2.
On Day 1, CM lost once to the Hazel Green Trojans of Huntsville, Ala. It sent the Eagles into Day 2 as the No. 3 seed. After a first-round bye and a win over Mount Juliet, Tenn., CM was able to avenge its loss to the Trojans with a 23-16 win. Hillsboro and the Eagles met in the quarterfinals, with the Burros prevailing 38-18.
CM faced the Trojans again in the semifinals, winning 24-12 to garner the rematch with the Burros, who ultimately proved too much.
Hillsboro’s win advanced the Burros to the nationals in Hoover, Ala., this weekend.
