Track and Field | A.J. Epenesa
Epenesa, a junior thrower for the Edwardsville boys’ track and field team, becomes the first Edwardsville AdVantage News Athlete of the Week after his performance at the Southwestern Illinois Relays on March 26 at the Winston Brown Track and Field Complex.
Epenesa won the discus and shot put events at the SWILs. His heave of 185-3 in the discus set a new meet benchmark. He threw the shot put 53-5 to win that event.
“It’s going well and I’m happy with my performance today in our first outdoor meet,” Epenesa said at the SWILs. “Obviously, I want to improve this season and come back at the start of it where I left off last season.”
On April 1, Epenesa helped lead the Tigers to the title of the 50th annual O’Fallon Relays. His discus throw of 190-11 was good for first place and a meet record. He won the shot put with a heave of 53-4.
Epenesa finished second at the Class 3A state tournament in the discus as a sophomore with a throw of 191-07 and ninth in the shot put with a toss of 53-9.25.
