Baseball | Jake Garella
The riches just keep getting richer for recent Edwardsville grad Garella.
The baseball standout earns Edwardsville AdVantage News Athlete of the Week after being named a second-team Louisville Slugger All-American. He was one of 50 players selected to the second team, with only 13 of those playing multiple positions. Garella was a standout third baseman and pitcher for the 29-8 Tigers in 2016.
The announcement of being named an All-American comes on the heels of Garella’s decision to take his talents to Saint Louis University next season. He was originally committed to the University of Mobile, a NAIA school in Alabama.
Garella batted a whopping .570 — an EHS record — this season to go with 4 homers, 36 RBIs and a team-best 16 doubles. He owned an on-base percentage of .610 and a slugging percentage of .850, both tops on the Tigers.
As a pitcher, Garella was 6-1 with a 0.19 ERA and 47 strikeouts to 10 walks in 37.2 innings pitched.
It marks the second straight year Edwardsville has had a Louisville Slugger All-American. Shortstop Jordan Hovey was a first-team selection last season.
