Zeller celebrated a Southwestern Conference girls’ golf individual championship on Sept. 27.
It took 21 holes to do it.
Zeller shot a five-over 77 in the first 18 holes, then she had to beat O’Fallon’s Natalie Meinkoth in a sudden-death playoff round to win the tournament at Belk Park Golf Course in Wood River. The Edwardsville junior shot a birdie on the par-3, No. 3 hole to clinch the tournament title.
The performance earned Zeller this week’s Edwardsville AdVantage News Athlete of the Week.
“I didn’t expect it at all because I know O’Fallon has a bunch of good girls on their team,” Zeller said. “I prepared for it this morning and I went out there and played my game.”
Zeller finished with 11 pars in the tournament. She helped the Tigers finish second as a team with a 341.
She followed that up with a 1-over-73 to take home medalist honors at the Gary Bair Tournament on Sept. 29 at Oak Brook Golf Club in Edwardsville. The Tigers shot 319 to finish runner-up to O’Fallon (304) in the team standings.
