Liz Parks | Edwardsville
Liz Parks, formerly Liz Speicher, a 2008 Edwardsville High graduate, won the women's championship of the 21st annual Mud Mountain Classic on July 30 at the SIUE cross country course.
Parks, 26, teaches third grade at Albert Cassens School in Glen Carbon. She turned in a time of 19 minutes, 56.02 seconds to finish 54th overall, but first among the female competitors.
“I hadn’t run in this race for five years, or since I was in college,” said Parks, a Southeast Missouri State graduate. “But I decided to do it this year because this is where it all started for me and I wanted to run at home.
“Edwardsville does that to you.”
Race coordinator and EHS cross country head coach George Patrylak was happy to see the former Tiger standout excel at Mud Mountain.
“I think she’s a better runner now because she’s in the best shape she has been in her life,” Patrylak said. “I’m amazed by what she does and Liz is one of those competitors who is a great person for other girls to talk to about running.”
