EXPLORERS TOP BULLDOGS — A three-run third spelled the difference for Marquette Catholic, which defeated host Staunton, 4-1, in nonconference play Tuesday.
Pitcher John Hughes of the Explorers then took care of things the rest of the way. The senior spun a four-hitter and struck out seven in a complete-game effort as Marquette pushed its record to 15-9.
Liam Maher and Jacob File both had two hits for the winners. The Explorers have won seven in a row and 11 of their last 12 games.
SHELLS BOP VANDALS – Roxana put it all together as the Shells walloped Vandalia, 8-1, in a South Central Conference game.
Randy Skiff had two doubles and a pair of RBIs as the Shells improved to 12-13 overall and 6-2 in the SCC. Roxana is scheduled to welcome Greenville today. The Comets suffered a 1-0 setback to league leader Southwestern in Brighton. The Piasa Birds are 7-0 in the SCC.
REDBIRDS ROUT FLYERS – Nick Cauley pitched a one-hit shutout to help host Alton crush East St. Louis, 12-0, in a five-inning Southwestern Conference game Tuesday. He struck out nine and didn’t walk a batter.
Drake Hampton went 4-for-4 and drove in a run for the Redbirds, while Derrick Allen was 3-for-3 and scored four times. Bryan Hudson pitched in with two hits and three RBIs as the Redbirds shot to 25-4. They are 10-2 in the SWC.
Alton’s 25 victories are within three wins of tying the school record. The 2001 Redbirds were 28-11 and the 2013 squad finished 28-10. AHS is slated to play Wednesday at Salem and then go to SWC rival Belleville West on Thursday.
OILERS BOW TO HILTOPPERS – EA-WR absorbed its 13th consecutive loss as Hillsboro scored a 3-1 win in nonconference play Tuesday.
The 3-31 Oilers are scheduled to play Wednesday at Litchfield and Thursday at Bunker Hill.
REDBIRDS BLAST FLYERS – Alton made short work of host East St. Louis, 13-0, in a five-inning SWC affair. The Redbirds lifted their overall record to 16-12. They are 5-7 in conference competition.
Taylor Herrin gave up two hits and struck out six over four innings to register the victory. Bronte Fencel collected two hits and two RBIs, as did Savannah Fisher. The Birds are slated to welcome Belleville West on Thursday.
OILERS BLANK HILLSBORO – Senior lefty Tori Beachum fashioned a three-hitter and fanned 16 to guide EA-WR by Hillsboro in nonconference action.
Carly Campbell contributed two hits and knocked in four runs as the Oilers improved to 14-19.
EA-WR made the most of seven hits. The Oilers scored two runs in the second inning, three in the third and four in the fourth. They also benefited from a pair of Hillsboro errors.
SHELLS POUND VANDALS – Roxana inched closer to the .500 mark by hammering Vandalia, 15-0, in a five-inning SCC game. The Shells, who bettered their overall mark to 15-16, improved to 6-2 in the SCC.
Hannah Rexford twirled a five-inning shutout and had plenty of backing. Phoebe Booher was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Lindsey Scroggins chipped in with two hits and a pair of RBIs. Cindy Scroggins had one hit and batted in four runs.
Roxana is set to entertain Greenville on Wednesday in another league game.
EXPLORERS FALL TO BULLDOGS – Host Staunton scored the winning run with one out in the ninth inning to shade Marquette, 2-1, in nonleague play.
The 21-9 Explorers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fourth before the Bulldogs tied things in the sixth. Staunton outhit Marquette, 5-4, but the Explorers couldn’t take advantage of five errors.
Miranda Schroeder drove in the Explorers’ lone run. Meghan Schorman worked 8.1 innings and struck out nine, allowing five hits and two runs.
Marquette is scheduled to play Wednesday at Belleville East and Thursday at Gillespie. The Explorers will play host to their 16th annual Cluster event Saturday at Moore Park.
In the opening game at 11 a.m., Marquette meets Calhoun on Diamond No. 6. Breese Mater Dei faces Waterloo Gibault at 11 a.m. on Diamond No. 7. Then at 1 p.m., Marquette tangles with Mater Dei on Diamond No. 6. Calhoun and Gibault clash at 1 p.m. on Diamond No. 7.
SHELLS THIRD IN SCC – Roxana scored 64 points to take third in the SCC boys’ track meet at Hillsboro. Pana tallied 121 points to win it and Carlinville grabbed second with 83 points.
Freshman Jordan Hawkins of Roxana won the discus with a throw of 135 feet, 2 inches. He also took third in the shot with a toss of 42-10.75. Teammate Jeddah Gallego of the Shells snagged three seconds. He was runner-up in the 100-meters in 11.17 seconds, the 200-meters at 22.52 and the 400-meters at 52.89. He also ran a leg on Roxana’s 4x400-meter relay, third in 3:36.22.
Marcus Sitko of Staunton won the 100-meters in 10.79, the 200-meters in 22.52 and the long jump by going 21-10. David Holden of Greenville was best in the 400-meters at 52.43.
Joey Johnson of Roxana was fourth in the 100-meter high hurdles (17.13) and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles (45.26)
Other teams and totals were: Greenville (62 points), Staunton (50), Hillsboro (42), Southwestern (38), Litchfield (35), Vandalia (33) and Gillespie (26).
The Shells are cast in the Class 2A Springfield Lanphier Sectional, set for Friday, May 22. CM is also in that 17-team field.
