SPRINGFIELD — Five Greater Alton area players are expected to participate in the 28th annual West Central Illinois All-Star prep football game Saturday. It’s set for 5 p.m. on June 11 at Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin High School’s west campus.
The game will feature 69 seniors from the 2015 season representing 25 high schools from West Central Illinois.
Locally, defensive back Luke Wells and offensive lineman Blake Weishaupt of East Alton-Wood River, quarterback Trey Aguirre and wide receiver Jesse Simmons of Marquette Catholic, along with running back Jarod Foiles of Roxana, are expected to compete for the South team.
Southwestern coach Aaron Fricke is coaching the South squad, while Shane Owsley of North Mac is guiding the North team. Carlinville coach Chad Easterday is coordinating the event.
The South team also will feature players from Breese Central, Carrollton, Gillespie, Greenfield/Northwestern, Jersey, Hillsboro, Litchfield and Southwestern. The North squad has players from Athens, Chatham Glenwood, Jacksonville, Jacksonville Routt, New Berlin, North Mac, Petersburg Porta, Pittsfield, Pleasant Hill, Riverton, Kincaid South Fork, Taylorville and Concord Triopia.
Practices start Monday at Carlinville High for the South team and at North Mac High for the North squad.
Admission to the game is $5 for adults or students. Children under 12 will be admitted free. There will be full concessions along with All-Star game T-shirts available for sale by The Cubby Hole. Gates will open one hour before the game.
Last year, the South held on for a 28-23 win over the North in a game that was called with 11:11 remaining in the fourth quarter because of lightning. The North leads the South 13-7 in the all-time series.
Prior to becoming a North-South game in 1996, the West held a 5-2 lead over the East.
