ALTON GETS HUGE VICTORY OVER LANCERS — The Alton Redibrds traveled to Belleville East on Friday and took care of business with a 17-14 victory.
The win lifted Alton to 4-2 on the season and 2-2 in the Southwestern Conference. With the loss, the Lancers slipped to 3-3 and 2-2.
East jumped on the Bird early, scoring all of its 14 points in the opening quarter. The Lancers led 14-7 over AHS after one quarter.
Alton's first score came on a 44-yard fumble return by senior Justus Pedrero.
AHS cut it to 14-10 in the second quarter when Brad Leonard connected on a 28-yard field goal.
Josh Lovings joined the fun in the third quarter, putting the Redbirds up to stay when he raced in on a 12-yard reverse. It was then Lovings stepping up on defense that truly saved the game.
With East staring at fourh-and-five in the red zone late, Lovings closed on a short pass and deflected it away near the goal line, securing the win.
CM CAN'T SOLVE HIGHLAND — Civic Memorial visited powerhouse Highland on Friday, but could not pull off the upset.
The Eagles lost the Mississippi Valley Conference showdown 49-28 to drop to 2-4 on the season overall and 0-3 in the MVC. The Bulldogs improved to 5-1 and 3-0 with the triumph.
The loss was the fourth straight for CM after starting the season 2-0.
