MARQUETTE CAN'T PULL IT OUT OVER NOKOMIS — The Marquette Catholic Explorers slipped to 1-3 at Public School Stadium on Friday, dropping a close contest to Nokomis 15-14.
The loss marked the first ever in Prairie State Conference action for the Explorers, who joined the league prior to the 2012 season. Marquette had a chance to pull out a victory, but missed a short field goal with 56 seconds left in the game.
The Explorers led 8-6 after one quarter and 14-6 at the break before watching Nokomis score nine unanswered points in the second half.
Brady McAfee got Marquette on the board, recording a safety in the first quarter. McAfee then added a 25-yard touchdown run as the Explorers led 8-6 after one quarter.
The other score came on a 50-yard TD hookup between quarterback Trey Aguirre and wide receiver Danny Holtz in the second quarter.
Aguirre finished the game 12 of 23 for 172 yards and a TD. McAfee was 1 of 1 for seven yards under center, too.
Holtz hauled in nine receptions for 164 yards and the score. Liam Maher had nine rushes for 20 yards. McAfee carried the ball once for the 25-yard TD.
Sam Stemm steered the defense with seven solo tackles and four assists for a team-high 11 total tackles. Riley Bamper had seven solo tackles and two assists while Chris Angleton had five solos and three assists in the loss.
Next up for Marquette is a 7 p.m. PSC showdown with East Alton-Wood River on the road.
OILERS STILL SEARCHING FOR FIRST WIN — The East Alton-Wood River Oilers saw their woes continue in Week 4.
EA-WR lost 44-16 to Bunker Hill on Friday to sink to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in its inaugural season in the Prairie State Conference. The Minutemen are 3-1 and 2-0 in the PSC.
The Oilers play host to Marquette at 7 p.m. in Week 5.
