ROCK ISLAND 38, ALTON 13 — The Alton Redbirds traveled to Rock Island and dropped their opening week game on the gridiron.
Five turnovers plagued the Birds against the Rocks, leading to 28 points. Alton trailed just 10-7 after one quarter, but were behind 24-7 at halftime.
Running back Darrell Smith enjoyed a monster game for AHS. He carried the ball 15 times for 185 yards and scored both touchdowns for the Redbirds, once in the first quarter and once in the fourth.
Next up for Alton is its home opener vs. Quincy at 7 p.m. on Sept. 2 at Public School Stadium.
BUNKER HILL 30, METRO EAST LUTHERAN 14 — MELHS lost its season and home opener Friday to visiting Bunker Hill in a non-conference affair.
The Minutemen grabbed a 14-0 lead after one quarter and led 22-6 at the break. After three quarters Bunker Hill went up 30-6 before the Knights scored a TD and a 2-point conversion in the fourth quarter.
Metro quarterback Darion Brooks tossed a pair of TD passes, one in the second quarter and one in the fourth. Brooks connected with Earl Green on a five-yard strike in the second and then found J.V. Wilson on a 70-yard hookup in the fourth quarter.
The Knights had to fight out of a hole, as the Minutemen scored on their first two possessions of the game.
MELHS welcomes Lighthouse Christian at 7 p.m. on Sept. 2 for its Week 2 contest.
CARLINVILLE 54, ROXANA 0 — The Shells had an unforgettable opener in the South Central Conference in Carlinville on Friday.
Roxana lost four fumbles and had an interception for five total turnovers in the game. The Cavaliers led 14-0 after one quarter, 28-0 at half and 42-0 after three.
Running back Jordan Hawkins led the Shells' offense with just 27 yards rushing. On defense, Hawkins posted seven solo tackles and four assisted tackles.
Carlinville also recovered an onside kick in the game.
Roxana remains on the road in Week 2, traveling to Pana at 7 p.m. on Sept. 2.
EDWARDSVILLE 14, QUINCY 0, SUSPENDED GAME — Thunderstorms entered Quincy at 9:15 p.m. on Friday, with lightning eventually suspending the game between Edwardsville and the Blue Devils.
There is 8:33 remaining in the third quarter with the Tigers ahead 14-0. The game will resume at 6 p.m. on Saturday in Quincy.
Davel Torres scored on a 19-yard run in the first quarter for EHS, while Dionte Rodgers punched in a 4-yard score on the ground in the second quarter.
Edwardsville quarterback Brenden Dickmann was 3-for-5 for 50 yards through the air.
After completing the game with Quincy Saturday, EHS returns home at 7 p.m. on Sept. 2 against Rock Island.
