The East Alton-Wood River Oilers knew they had a major obstacle in Week 1 of the 2015 season with the Columbia Eagles on the road. It proved to be an obstacle EA-WR couldn't overcome.
The Oilers were blanked 49-0 by the Eagles in new head coach Garry Herron's first game at the helm, dropping them to 0-1.
Columbia went up 14-0 after one quarter, with EA-WR shaving time off the clock for much of the stanza with its running game.
A pair of botched kickoffs plagued the Oilers in the second quarter and the Eagles were able to capitalize on, scoring 28 points to take a 42-0 advantage into the break.
With a running clock in the second half, Columbia didn't score again until the fourth quarter to create the final score.
Zach Kincade played well on both sides of the ball for the Oilers, leading them in tackles on defense and rushing 11 times for 20 yards to guide the running game on offense. Chris Hamby had six carries for 15 yards and T.J. Lawson hauled the rock five times for 14 yards also.
Quarterback Lucas Wells was 1 for 6 for 45 yards, completing the one long pass to Lucas Westbrook.
In comparison, EA-WR lost to Columbia 62-0 in 2014, so the results were slightly better to open 2015.
The Oilers now prepare for their home opener at 7 p.m. on Sept. 4 against Centralia.
CM VS. MARQUETTE — The Civic Memorial Eagles visit Public School Stadium at 7 p.m. Saturday to take on rival Marquette Catholic.
It's the season opener for the Eagles and the Explorers. Last season in Bethalto CM won 49-7 over Marquette.
