EA-WR 44, BUNKER HILL 24 — Mother Nature did her best to deny the Oilers their second win of the season Friday, but in the end EA-WR won out.
The Oilers and Minutemen waited out a long lightning delay, but EA-WR scored on its first drive back on the field to go up 18-6 and never looked back.
The Oilers are 2-1 for the first time since 2013. They're looking for their first winning season since 2006.
It marks the first time EA-WR has opened the Prairie State Conference with a win since joining the league in 2014.
Next up for the Oilers is a showdown with rival Marquette Catholic at Memorial Stadium in Week 4.
MOUNT ZION 40, CM 6 — The Eagles went on the road Friday in a tough matchup with Mount Zion, suffering their first loss of the season.
The Braves built a 40-0 lead before CM was able to get on the scoreboard. Corey Price rumbled in on a 4-yard score with 5:33 remaining the game.
The Eagles are 2-1 on the season and enter Mississippi Valley Conference play in Week 4, welcoming rival Jersey to Lewis Hauser Field.
ALTON, GRANITE CITY, MARQUETTE POSTPONED UNTIL SATURDAY — The Redbirds, Warriors and Explorers all saw their conference openers postponed on Friday due to lightning and the threat of rain.
Alton will travel back to East St. Louis at 1:30 p.m. Saturday to open SWC play, looking for its first win in a tough matchup. The Flyers are 2-0 on the season.
Granite City battles Belleville East at 7 p.m. Saturday in Belleville. The Warriors are 1-1 while the Lancers are 0-2.
Marquette will look for its first victory at 7 p.m. Saturday at Public School Stadium against Nokomis in its Prairie State Conference opener. The Redskins are also 0-2 on the season.
