ROXANA GETS TO 2-2 WITH WIN IN VANDALIA — Big plays fueled the Roxana Shells Friday in a 36-14 South Central Conference win in Vandalia.
The Shells ran their record to 2-2 on the season and got some big plays from their running game.
Blake Vandiver had 11 carries for 165 yards and a 55-yard touchdown run. He also had a run of 75 yards in the game and caught a five-yard TD pass. Sophomore Jordan Hawkins ran 14 times for 143 yards and a 75-yard TD in his second week in the backfield for Roxana. Jarod Foiles had eight carries for 54 yards and a 33-yard TD scamper. Talon Pile also had 53 rushing yards on six carries.
Quarterback Chance Foss was 3 of 7 through the air for 90 yards and a TD. He had a 78-yard completion to tight end Trace Gentry.
Foss, Vandiver and Marcus Hartnett all had interceptions for the defense, while Billy Mathis had 10 total tackles on the Roxana line. Hawkins had eight solos and an assisted tackle and Gentry had five solos, an assist and a sack in the win.
The Shells return home in Week 5 to battle Greenville in their Homecoming Game.
Other SCC scores Friday included: Pana (4-0) blanking Carlinville (2-2) 35-0, Hillsboro (3-1) topping Greenville (1-3) 48-28, Litchfield (2-2) shutting out Staunton (0-4) 40-0 and Southwestern (2-2) besting Gillespie (2-2) 40-13.
LIGHTNING POSTPONES MARQUETTE AT NOKOMIS — Lightning encompassed the field at Nokomis, postponing the game between Marquette Catholic and the Redskins on Friday.
The two squads were mired in a scoreless tie with 10:40 remaining in the second quarter of Prairie State Conference action. The game will resume play at 7 p.m. Saturday in Nokomis.
In other PSC scores, Pawnee ran roughshod over Mount Olive 51-0, East Alton-Wood River fell 36-26 to Bunker Hill and South Fork and Metro East Lutheran were suspended with the Ponies leading 12-0 over the Knights.
ALTON FALLS TO BELLEVILLE EAST — Woes continued for the Alton Redbirds as they fell 42-14 to the Belleville East Lancers on the road Friday in Southwestern Conference play.
The Birds are now 0-4 and 0-2 following the loss. East is now 3-1 and 2-0.
Alton trailed 7-0 at the end of the first quarter, but Asa Collins' first of two rushing touchdowns cut it to 7-6 early in the second quarter. East was able to take a 28-6 lead into the locker room though.
AHS scored eight unanswered points in the third quarter to get it to 28-14, but the Lancers scored a pair of TDs in the fourth quarter.
The other scores for the Redbirds came on a TD run by Collins and a safety in the third quarter.
Overall Alton ran for 259 total yards. Collins had 14 rushes for 96 yards and the pair of TDs, while Jameyon Alexander had 15 carries for 93 yards.
Defensively, Collins produced eight solo tackles, including a tackle for a loss and the safety. Kevin Caldwell had four solos and four assists and an interception which he returned for 25 yards.
AHS is back at Public School Stadium in Week 5 to take on O'Fallon in SWC action.
Other SWC scores Friday were: Belleville West defeating Collinsville 43-7, Edwardsville prevailing over O'Fallon 24-10 and East St. Louis blanking Granite City 68-0.
