SHELLS KEEP ROLLING IN LITCHFIELD — The Roxana Shells kept their winning streak alive at four games on Friday in Litchfield.
Roxana defeated its Prairie State Conference rival 38-27 to improve to 4-2 on the season. The Purple Panthers are now 3-3 following the loss.
The Shells trailed 7-6 after one quarter, but erupted for 24 second-quarter points to nab a 30-7 lead at the break. Litchfield outscored Roxana 20-8 in the second half, but it wasn't enough for the win.
Sophomore fullback Jordan Hawkins was a workhorse for the Shells, carrying the ball 26 times for 179 yards and four touchdowns.
Senior tailback Blake Vandiver had to leave with an injury after just five plays and didn't return. Vandiver had five carries for 50 yards.
Jarod Foiles hauled the rock 11 times for 52 yards, while Talon Pile had nine carries for 40 yards in the Roxana backfield.
Quarterback Chance Foss was 2 of 6 through the air for 56 yards and TD. He connected with Foiles on a 33-yard TD strike.
Defensively, Billy Mathis had eight solo tackles and five assists for 13 total tackles in the win. Ryan Harris had eight solos and one assist to go along with a sack and a fumble recovery, while Hawkins and Trace Gentry had nine total tackles apiece.
Roxana returns home in Week 7 against Gillespie.
MARQUETTE HEADS TO PAWNEE — The Marquette Catholic Explorers will look to extend their winning streak to four games at 1 p.m. Saturday in Pawnee.
The Explorers (3-2) face the Indians (4-1) for supremacy in the Prairie State Conference. Both squads sit at 3-0 in league play entering Saturday.
