ROXANA PLAYS TOUGH DEFENSE IN WIN OVER HILTOPPERS — The Roxana Shells won their first game of the year Friday in Hillsboro and they did it in fine fashion.
The Shells are now 1-2 on the season after defeating the previously undefeated Hiltopppers 34-7. Roxana never trailed in the game, leading 6-0 after the first quarter and 14-7 at the break before scoring 20 unanswered points in the second half.
It was the best defensive performance of the young season for the Shells. Chance Foss and Zach Golenor each hauled in interceptions against Hillsboro, while Jarod Foiles led in tackles with 18 total, nine solos and nine assists.
Other lead tacklers for Roxana were: Billy Mathis with seven solos and four assists for 11 total, Talon Pile with six solos and five assists for 11 total and Foss with seven solos and two assists for nine total.
Offensively, Foss was 6 for 11 through the air for 84 yards and two touchdowns. He also had a two-point conversion.
Blake Vandiver stirred the ground game with 12 carries for 117 yards and two TDs. Vandiver also caught three ball for 20 yards and a score and had a successful two-point conversion.
Foiles had 10 carries for 50 yards with a TD and two-point conversion and Trace Gentry had two snares for 61 yards and a score in the receiving game.
A switch in the offense saw sophomore Jordan Hawkins move to the backfield where he produced with 18 carries for 111 yards as the fullback.
The Shells head to Vandalia to take on the 2-1 Vandals in Week 4. Vandalia defeated Staunton (0-3) 43-0 on Friday.
Other South Central Conference scores from Friday include: Pana (3-0) beating Gillespie (2-1) 35-12, Litchfield (1-2) topping Southwestern (1-2) 15-14 and Carlinville (2-1) besting Greenville (1-2) 56-26.
