EA-WR 46, NOKOMIS 34 -- After nine consecutive losing seasons, the East Alton-Wood River Oilers are back on the winning track this fall.
The Oilers clinched their first winning season in 10 years – and a possible playoff spot -- after beating Nokomis on Friday on the road. EA-WR improved to 5-3 overall and 4-2 in Prairie State Conference play with one game remaining.
Zach Womack rushed for 363 yards with 16 carries and five touchdowns, Gabe Grimes finished with 125 yards rushing with 20 carries, quarterback Justin Englar was 3 for 9 with 39 yards passing, Zack Kincade had nine tackles and blocked a field goal and Lucas Westbrook and Chandler Eckhoff each had five tackles.
The Oilers are guaranteed a state playoff berth with a victory at Mt. Olive next Friday in their regular season finale. EA-WR’s last trip to the state playoffs was in 2006.
EA-WR also had wins over Dupo, Bunker Hill, Metro-East Lutheran, South Fork this season. In Friday’s win over Nokomis, the Oilers came up one point shy from their season-high point total of 47 that was set in their season-opening win over Dupo on Aug. 26.
EA-WR scored over 40 points three times this season.
A year ago, the Oilers finished 1-8. They ended their 2015 season with a 41-14 loss to the Redskins.
On Friday, EA-WR led 34-19 at halftime. Nokomis rallied to tie the game at 34-34 after the third quarter, but the Oilers outscored the Redskins 12-0 in the final quarter to pull off the win.
ROXANA 31, STAUNTON 6 – Joey Johnson rushed for 124 yards with 17 carries and two touchdowns, Wyatt Kirkpatrick finished with 129 yards rushing with 21 carries and one TD and Marcus Hartnett scored a 1-yard TD run to lift the Shells to win over the Bulldogs on Friday on the road.
Roxana improved to 2-6 with one game remaining. The Shells wrap up their regular season with a home game against Southwestern.
Roxana beat Litchfield on Sept. 30 for its first win after losing its first five games.
Robby Williams had eight tackles, two assists and one sack and Trey Kelly finished with seven tackles, four assists and a sack for the Shells, who led 14-0 at halftime.
PAWNEE 47, METRO-EAST LUTHERAN 12 – The Knights remained winless after falling to Pawnee on the road on Friday.
MELHS dropped to 0-8 overall and 0-6 in Prairie State Conference play with one game remaining. The Knights close out their season next Friday at Bunker Hill.
Jvyaun Wilson and Earl Green each scored touchdowns for MELHS. Wilson scored on a 60-yard kickoff return with 6:12 left in the first quarter to tie the game at 6-6. Green caught a five-yard touchdown pass from Darion Brooks with 40 seconds left in the game.
Green rushed for 65 yards on nine carries and Green caught for 37 yards on five receptions and finished with six tackles. Kyle Johnson finished with seven tackles and one assist.
