A quick start proved to be a winning formula for the Southwestern Piasa Birds on Friday.
They built an 8-1 lead by the second inning and outlasted Roxana, 12-8, in a nonconference game at Schneider Park. Southwestern had 14 hits in all, with Spencer Heineman and Blake Lawson getting three hits apiece.
Lawson and Jimme Naylor of Southwestern both drove in two runs. Heineman stroked a pair of doubles, while Cody Roberts, Zack Seymour and Naylor had two hits each.
Andrew Fry was the winning pitcher as the Piasa Birds improved to 14-9.
Randy Skiff had three hits and two RBIs for the 9-12 Shells. Nelson Martz went 2-for-3 with a solo home run. Logan Reardon had two hits.
CM 4, Jersey 3 – The Eagles won in Jerseyville to sweep the Panthers in Mississippi Valley Conference action this season. Civic Memorial lifted its record to 15-6 overall and 3-2 in the MVC. Jersey is 15-8 and 1-5.
Cory Howard had three hits for CM, which built a 4-0 lead. Lefty Brett Beckham logged the win and beat Jersey for the second time this season. He also got the win in a 3-1 decision at Bethalto.
Marquette 14, Jax Routt 0 – Winning their eighth in a row, the host Marquette Explorers improved to 14-7. They exploded for nine runs in the second inning to win the nonconference affair in five innings.
Aaron Mattix-Wand contributed three hits and two RBIs to the Explorers’ 18-hit attack. Austin Siener pitched in with two hits and a pair of RBIs. Nick Hoefert added two hits and Chris Angleton had two RBIs.
Stephen Peuterbaugh hurled a two-hit shutout and struck out seven.
Southwestern 7, Roxana 2 – Katie Wooldridge and Kelsey Rhoades both had three hits in the Piasa Birds’ SCC victory over the Shells. Ashlyn Ringhausen chipped in with a pair of doubles to back winning pitcher Abby Stormer.
Southwestern shot to 9-10 overall and 2-2 in the SCC. Ashley Meyers and Cindy Scroggins both had two hits, including home runs, for Roxana.
Calhoun 6, Jersey 1 – Grace Baalman continued her stellar pitching as Class 1A power Calhoun downed Jersey in a nonconference contest. Baalman spun a two-hitter and fanned 14.
Macy Thurston took the loss for the Panthers, who made five errors. Bethany Muenstermann had a hit and knocked in Jersey’s lone run.
Gillespie 2, EA-WR 1 – The Miners made a two-run first inning hold up in their nonconference win against the Oilers. Winning pitcher Addison Bryant gave up one hit and struck out 10 in outdueling EA-WR’s Victoria Beachum. She allowed three hits and fanned eight.
Molly Gray had two of the Miners’ three hits.
SIUE 14, UT Martin 7 -- Devin Caldwell, Nick Lombardo, Chase Green and Jacob Stewart all had four hits in the Cougars win in Martin, Tenn. Caldwell is a Civic Memorial High graduate and Lombardo is from Alton High.
SIUE is 17-26 overall and 13-12 in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Cougars, who have won four of their last five games, erupted for 25 hits. Alex Saikal contributed three hits and three RBIs.
