ALTON TOPS O'FALLON IN SWC FINALE — The Alton Redbirds went on the road Friday and topped O'Fallon 61-52 in their Southwestern Conference and regular season finale.
Alton wrapped up the regular season at 13-9 and 9-5 with the win, while the Panthers finished 8-18 and 3-11.
AHS now battles Chatham Glenwood at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Class 4A Alton Regional. The Redbirds are the No. 3 seed out of the Collinsville Sub-Sectional. O'Fallon goes to the East St. Louis Regional and faces Belleville West at 7 p.m. tonight in a play-in game. The Panthers are the No. 10 seed.
On Friday, Alton nabbed a 16-11 lead after one quarter and a 32-23 advantage at halftime. The Birds led 42-31 after three quarters on the way to the win.
Alton was paced by three double-digit scorers. Maurice Edwards guided the group with 16 points, while Paul Harris punched in 14 and Kevin Caldwell, Jr. chipped in with 11.
Chance Armstrong of the Panthers led all scorers with 19 points. Ryan Fulton netted 18 to complement him.
CM FALLS TO WATERLOO AT HOME — The Civic Memorial dropped their regular season finale at home on Friday, losing to Mississippi Valley Conference rival Waterloo 61-60.
The Eagles finished the regular season at 17-11 overall and 6-4 in the MVC. They finished on a two-game losing streak and 3-7 over their final 10 games. They enter the Class 3A Triad Regional at 6 p.m. tonight vs. Mascoutah. CM was 2-0 vs. the Indians during the regular season. A win tonight advances CM to face top-seeded Althoff at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
The Eagles are the No. 7 seed out of the Highland Sub-Sectional. Mascoutah is the No. 8 seed. Waterloo, the No. 10 seed, heads to the Columbia Regional and plays No. 11 Freeburg at 7 p.m. tonight. The Bulldogs wrapped up the regular season at 7-21 and 2-8.
Against Waterloo, CM led 14-11 after one quarter on Friday, but trailed 23-22 at the break. The Eagles jumped back in front 39-38 after three, but the Bulldogs outscored them 23-21 in the fourth to nab the one-point victory.
Brett Lane paced CM with 17 points, while JaQuan Adams and Adam Hill joined him in double figures with 12 points apiece. Hill also pulled down 9 rebounds and added 3 assists.
Waterloo's Ben Huels led all scorers with 18 points, while Ross Schrader netted 16, Griffin Lenhardt scored 11 and Dylan Hunt punched in 10 to complement him.
The Eagles honored long-time athletics director Steve Carey at Friday's home finale. Carey will be retiring at the end of the school year after 23 years as the athletics director and 33 years in the Bethalto School District.
GRANITE CITY STUMBLES TO BELLEVILLE WEST ON THE ROAD — The Granite City Warriors fell 61-41 at Belleville West on Friday, wrapping up the regular season and Southwestern Conference action.
The Warriors finish at 13-14 and 6-8 with the loss. They have dropped their final three regular season contests and four out of the last five. The Maroons conclude at 13-13 and 7-7 with three straight SWC wins over Collinsville, Alton and GCHS.
Granite City now battles SWC rival Collinsville at 7 p.m. tonight in the Class 4A Alton Regional play-in game. GCHS is the No. 7 seed out of the Collinsville Sub-Sectional, while the Kahoks are the No. 9 seed. A win tonight for the Warriors advances them to the semifinals at 7 p.m. Tuesday against No. 2 seed Quincy at Alton.
West is the No. 8 seed and meets No. 10 seed O'Fallon at 7 p.m. tonight in a play-in game at the East St. Louis Regional.
The Maroons, who are trending upward, led 14-5 over Granite City on Friday after one quarter and extended their lead to 29-14 at the break and were ahead 42-24 after three frames.
Kenny Berry netted 16 points to direct the Warriors, while Jamie Roustio complemented him with 12 points in the loss.
West's Tyler Dancy paced all scorers with 20 points, while E.J. Liddell punched in 18 and Dalton Fox had 10 for good measure.
