ROXANA – Jeddah Gallego of the Roxana Shells keeps taking big strides during his senior track and field season.
He took another step in the right direction Monday.
Gallego won the 100-meters in 11.15 seconds, was runner-up in the long jump at 19 feet, 10 inches and excelled on two relay squads in the annual Roxana Relays.
“Jeddah is getting better and better and he has a lot of momentum going,” Roxana coach Juli Akal said. “He’s really rising up and he has become a leader for our team this year.”
Gallego anchored the Shells’ 4x400-meter relay team, first in 3:26.8. He also ran the final leg of the 4x2 relay, which finished second to Highland, the overall team champion.
“It was pretty satisfying to win the 100-meters and I feel like I’m getting where I need to be this season,” Gallego said. “I had a rough start earlier in the season when I had a toe injury.”
He added, “I’ve been progressing. The 100-meters is my best event right now, but I really enjoy running on the relays because it feels like I’m a central part of the team.”
Highland scored 99 points to shade Jersey, second with 97 points in the six-team boys’ competition of the 57th annual meet. Roxana took third with 67 points. Civic Memorial (44 points), East Alton-Wood River (23) and Freeburg (18) rounded out the guys’ scoring.
Jersey coach Harold Landon said the meet showed how rugged the Mississippi Valley Conference competition likely will become this spring.
“Highland has to be the favorite in the conference and they may battle it out with Triad,” he said. “Highland has depth in the sprints.”
Jersey rolled up 100 points for the team title in the 28th annual girls’ competition. Mascoutah placed second with 82 points, or one more point than Highland. Roxana (31), CM (22) and EA-WR (22) completed the girls’ totals.
“Our field events carried us,” Jersey girls’ coach Megan Taake said. “We got out to a fast start and that helped us. Sydney Jones really had a big day.”
Jones won the long jump by going 15-7 and was best in the triple jump at 33-4.5. She was the long individual double winner in the meet.
Roxana freshman Jordan Hawkins finished first in the discus with a throw of 125-9.4 and snared third in the discus at 41-6.
“Jordan had a big day in the discus, but what I was most happy with was his throw in the shot,” Akal said.
Gallego teamed with Jarod Foiles, Brady Lewis and J.D. Thaxton to win the 4x4 relay. It was Trey Kelly, Joe Johnson and Michael Cherry working with Lewis on the Shells’ low hurdle shuttle relay squad, first in 1:01.2.
So the Shells had four winners in all.
“I think CM’s boys are the team to beat in next Monday’s Madison County Meet,” Eagles’ coach Clint Walters said. EA-WR will play host to the boys and girls’ small-school action next Monday on Orv Yocum Track.
Oilers’ coach Russ Colona noted, “The girls competition looks like it will be wide open.”
The large-school guys and girls will participate on Tuesday, April 28, at Collinsville. Edwardsville’s boys, along with the Alton and Edwardsville girls, should contend for team championships. The Redbirds welcome their girls’ invitational on Thursday at Public School Stadium.
Alex Singleton supplied CM with its best individual finish in the Roxana Relays. The junior snagged second in the girls’ 3,200-meters at 12:06.5. Highland’s Jayden Shelton won it in 12:05.9. Brenden Springman of EA-WR snared second in the boys’ 3,200-meters at 10:59.6. Mike Roach of Jersey won it in 10:54.
