Carlinville Class 2A Regional – Hillsboro defeated Gillespie 66-53 in Monday’s opener to get a shot at top-seeded Litchfield at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Second-seeded Carlinville and third-seeded Southwestern tangle at 8 p.m.
The two winners clash at 7 p.m. Friday for the regional title.
Dylan Miller (24 points) and Ryan Calvert (23 points) led the Hiltoppers. Evan Price (17 points) and Blake Peterson (14 points) paced the Miners.
Bunker Hill Class 1A Regional - Brussels won a thriller over Metro East Lutheran 75-74 and will clash with top-seeded Madison at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Riley Caselton (27 points) and Tyler Friedel (22 points) spurred the Raiders at Hlafka Hall. John Batts of the Knights led all scorers with 31 points.
In Tuesday’s regional action, Carrollton faces Mount Olive at 6 p.m. and Calhoun squares off against Bunker Hill at 8 p.m.
Jersey 71, Highland 61 – The 17-9 Panthers, fresh from their victory at home Friday against Highland, play at Mississippi Valley Conference leader Waterloo on Tuesday night. A win would give the Panthers a share of the league lead. They trail Waterloo by one game.
Kyle Steckel scored a career-best 26 points in the win over Highland to give him 982 points for his career. He also has emerged as Jersey’s all-time leader in assists. He has 328.
Jacksonville Class 1A Super-Sectional – Carrollton shaded Astoria 40-38 at Illinois College and secured a date in the small-school semifinals this weekend at Illinois State University in Normal.
Maddie Struble’s 19 points and eight rebounds guided the 24-6 Hawks. They have won five consecutive postseason games.
Carrollton will play Moweaqua A & M Central at 12:15 Friday in the first semifinal. Annawan battles Lanark Eastland in the second semifinal at 2 p.m. The championship game is set for 2 p.m. Saturday
Ricky Roberts and Addison Kaufmann of Alton High both qualified for this weekend’s IHSA swim finals. Each advanced in two events from the Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin Sectional.
Roberts, a senior, finished second in the 200-yard freestyle at 1 minute, 42.36 seconds and was runner-up in the 500-yard freestyle at 4:45.55.
Kaufmann, a junior, placed second in the 200-yard individual medley at 1:55.29 and took third in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:00.34. Edwardsville’s Patrick Hesse won that latter event in 57.28 seconds. The Tigers also won two relay races and Hesse, a senior, was on both of them.
