For the first time since 2012, the Class 4A regional volleyball tournament is returning to Alton High School.
The Redbirds will host the five-team regional tournament that begins on Oct. 24 and ends on Oct. 27.
Edwardsville is the No. 1 seed in the Alton Regional and will play the winner of the Alton-Glenwood match in the semifinals at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 25.
Granite City will be playing in the Class 4A O'Fallon Regional. Civic Memorial, East Alton-Wood River and Roxana will play in the Class 3A Jersey Regional, Marquette Catholic will head to the Class 2A North Greene Regional and Metro-East Lutheran and Father McGivney will be in the Class 1A Metro-East Lutheran Regional.
Seedings and pairings of the volleyball postseason tournament were announced on Friday.
Edwardsville is the top seed of sub-sectional B of the Glenwood Sectional. The Tigers are 21-4 overall and 6-0 against their sub-sectional opponents.
Edwardsville is looking to win its first regional championship in three years. The Tigers were knocked out in the regional finals in each of the last two years. A year ago, they lost to O’Fallon in three games in the Class 4A Granite City Regional championship match.
Edwardsville was the regional champion the last time the regional tournament was held at AHS four years ago. The Tigers beat Springfield in the finals.
Alton and Glenwood will square off in a first-round match at 6 p.m. on Oct. 24. Glenwood is the No. 7 seed and the Redbirds are seeded 10th, and they are playing each other in regional tournament play for the second straight year.
Last year, the Titans beat the Redbirds in three games (25-22, 20-25, 30-28) in a first-round Class 4A Granite City Regional match. In the third game, Alton was at match point three times, but was unable to pull off the win.
Granite City is seeded ninth and will be playing eighth-seeded Collinsville in a first-round match at 6 p.m. at Oct. 24. The winner of that match will play second-seeded O'Fallon in the regional semifinals at 5:30 the next night.
The Warriors lost to the Kahoks in two games in the last meeting on Sept. 8 in Collinsville.
Last year, Granite City lost to Quincy in two games in first-round Class 4A Granite City Regional game.
Civic Memorial and EA-WR will square off in a first-round Class 3A Jersey Regional game at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 24. The Eagles are seeded sixth and the Oilers are seeded 12th.
The Eagles beat EA-WR in two games in their last meeting on Aug. 25 at CM. The two teams will play each other again on Oct. 15 at the Jersey Tournament.
Last year, CM beat the Oilers in two games in the first round before losing to Jacksonville in three games in the semifinals at the Class 3A Greenville Regional.
Roxana is the No. 4 seed. Last year, the Shells lost to Greenville in two games in a first-round Greenville Regional game.
Marquette is the No. 5 seed in the Class 2A North Greene Regional and will play fourth-seeded Greenfield in the semifinals at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 25.
A year ago, the Explorers lost to Carlinville in two games in the Class 2A Carlinville Regional semifinals.
Metro-East Lutheran will look to win a Class 1A regional title for the second year in a row. The Knights are seeded fourth and will play the winner of the Father McGivney-First Baptist Academy of O'Fallon match in the regional semifinals at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 25.
Last year, the Knights beat Lebanon in three games in the MELHS Regional championship match, their 10th regional crown under coach Jon Giordano. MELHS lost to Clay City in the St. Elmo Sectional semifinals.
Father McGivney, the No. 7 seed, and First Baptist Academy, the No. 11 seed, will square off in a first-round game at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 24. The Griffins are playing in their first year of postseason competition.
All regional championship games at Alton, O’Fallon, Jersey, North Greene and MELHS are scheduled for 6 p.m. on Oct. 27.
