CLASS 2A BOYS' STATE TOURNAMENT — The first day of the Class 2A state tournament at Weibring Golf Course in Normal is in the books and East Alton-Wood River's Drew Sobol has plenty to be stoked about.
Sobol is cast in a four-way tie for the top spot at state after Day 1, carding a 2-over-73. He's knotted up with Morton's Tommy Kuhl, Bloomington Central Catholic's Parker Wisdom and Mattoon's Nicholas Nguyen. Sobol shot a 2-over-38 on the front 9 Friday and an even-73 on the back 9.
Sobol tees off at No. 1 at Weibring at 10:27 a.m. Saturday.
The Marquette Catholic Explorers had their struggles on the team front at Weibring on Friday. They find themselves in 10th place with a 328 after the first day, shooting plus-44 as a team.
Kolten Bauer (79) led the Explorers. The rest of the lineup rounded out with: Nick Messinger (82), Michael Holtz (83), Jack Patterson (84), Sam Cogan (87) and Duncan McLain (90).
They are 21 strokes off Mundelein (Carmel) which leads the field with a 307. Normal University holds the No. 3 slot with a 316, leaving Marquette 12 strokes off a chance to bring home a team trophy.
Bauer is tied for 36th individually.
CLASS 3A BOYS' STATE TOURNAMENT — The Edwardsville Tigers are in seventh place as a team at the Class 3A state tournament at The Den at Fox Creek Golf Course in Bloomington after the first day.
EHS shot a 310, or plus-22 as a team. That score puts the Tigers 19 shots behind leader Hinsdale Central (291). They are 8 shots behind third place Wilmette (Loyola Academy) (302) and a shot to bring home a trophy.
Individually, Edwardsville's Tanner White is in a five-way tie for fourth place with a par-72. He trails leader Brendan O'Reilly of Hinsdale Central by three strokes.
Fellow Tiger Ben Tyrrell is in a three-way tie for ninth place, shooting a 1-over-73 on Friday.
The rest of the EHS lineup rounds out with: Jon Ratterman (82), Luke Babington (83), Spencer Patterson (84) and Blake Burris (95).
CLASS A GIRLS' STATE TOURNAMENT — Roxana's Bailey Sharpmack is perched in a 10-way tie for 25th place individually at the Class A state tournament at Red Tail Run Golf Course in Decatur.
Sharpmack is shooting 12-over-84, which is 10 strokes short of leader Lauren Chappell of Charleston (74).
Sharpmack tees off on No. 10 at 10:09 a.m. on Saturday.
CLASS AA GIRLS' STATE TOURNAMENT — Edwardsville's Kayla Weinacht shot an 11-over-83 on Day 1 of the Class AA state tournament at Hickory Point Golf Club in Decatur on Friday.
Weinacht is cast in four-way tie for 71st place after her first 18 holes. She is 12 strokes off the lead score of 71. There are seven players tied for the top spot.
Weinacht starts on No. 10 at 9:51 a.m. on Saturday.
