Track and Field | Will O’Keefe
A year ago, the Granite City Warriors didn’t get any first-place finishes at the Granite City Invitational.
On April 15, Will O’Keefe made sure the Warriors weren’t going to leave the Granite City meet empty-handed again.
O’Keefe, a junior, won the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4 minutes, 25.86 seconds. He was the Warriors’ lone champion in the 16-team Granite City meet.
The performance earned O’Keefe this week’s Granite City AdVantage News Athlete of the Week award.
O’Keefe won the 1,600 by one second over Marion’s Zach Young. By winning the 1,600, O’Keefe won his second Granite City Invitational championship. He won the 800-meter run during his freshman year.
In last year’s Granite City meet, O’Keefe got second-place finishes in the 800 and as a member of 3,200-meter relay team. He lost the 800 by 0.18 seconds.
O’Keefe also finished first place in three events — 1,600, 800 and 4x400-meter relay — at the Military Classic Invitational on Friday in Mascoutah. He won the 1,600 in 4:34.94, beating his brother, Andrew, by almost two seconds.
O’Keefe had a victory in the 1,600 at the Norm Armstrong Invitational on April 9 at Belleville West.
O’Keefe is competing in his third season with the Granite City boys’ track team. Last season, O’Keefe qualified for state in the 800 and the 4x8 relay.
