Baseball | Bennett Smallie
Bennett Smallie left Car Shield Field in O’Fallon, Mo., with some hardware on July 31.
The catcher from the Granite City Warriors St. Louis Amateur Baseball Association 15-and-under baseball team earned Most Valuable Player honors for the North All-Star team, going 1 for 1 with a walk, two stolen bases and a run scored. Smallie received a plaque for his honor.
The effort earned Smallie this week’s Granite City AdVantage News Athlete of the Week award.
Smallie was one of four Granite City players who participated in the 15U all-star game, which was won by the South All-Stars, 7-6. He played in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings for the North All-Stars.
Smallie walked in his first at-bat. In his second at-bat in the top of the seventh, he tied the game at 6-6 with an RBI single to left field.
“It was a really cool experience for all involved,” Granite City coach Scott Smallie, Bennett’s father, said. “He was pretty thrilled about that and so was I.”
Smallie, a freshman at Granite City High School, helped the Warriors finish with a 13-6 record this summer. He hit .400 with 14 hits and five runs batted in.
