Basketball | Tra’ Allen
Granite City boys’ basketball coach Steve Roustio was pretty thrilled with the way Allen played defensively in the Warriors’ Southwestern Conference opener against the O’Fallon Panthers on the road on Dec. 4.
“He’s capable of being pretty lethal offensively, but he didn’t,” Roustio said. “But he didn’t get frustrated and that’s a sign of a pretty mature senior to keep playing and taking care of the defensive end. I thought he did that.”
The 6-foot-5 Allen finished with seven rebounds — six of them were on the defensive end — and six blocks to help the Warriors pull off a 49-30 win over the Panthers.
“Tra’ Allen was incredible at the defensive end,” Roustio said.
The performance earned Allen this week’s Granite City AdVantage News Athlete of the Week award.
Allen finished with just six points against O’Fallon, but he hit a free throw with 3:51 left in the first quarter that gave Granite City an 8-7 lead it didn’t relinquish. The free throw was part of a 16-3 run for the Warriors, who finished with just one win in conference play last year.
One of four seniors on the Granite City boys’ basketball team, Allen is averaging 10 points and six rebounds per game. He scored a season-high 24 points and directed the offense in the Warriors’ 65-59 loss to Alton on Dec. 11.
