Justin Simpson had reason to celebrate on Jan. 23.
The Granite City senior qualified for the state tournament by shooting a 1,422 in the Cahokia Sectional at Bel-Air Bowl in Belleville. Simpson became the first Granite City bowler in three seasons to clinch a state berth.
The effort earned Simpson this week’s Granite City AdVantage News Athlete of the Week award.
Simpson bowled a six-game score of 1,270 in the first round of the state tournament on Jan. 29 but didn’t advance to the second round. He competed at state for the second time in his high school bowling career. He bowled two games in the first round during his freshman year.
Simpson earned a berth to this year’s sectional tournament by bowling a 1,190 on Jan. 16 in the Collinsville Regional. He was one of three Granite City regional qualifiers.
Simpson competed with the Granite City bowling team all four years. In his freshman year, he was a member of a Granite City bowling team that won its first sectional championship and qualified for state. This year, he was the Warriors’ top bowler with a 214 average.
Simpson plans to continue his bowling career at Lindenwood-Belleville next year. He agreed to bowl for the NAIA school at Bel-Air Bowl on Jan. 22, a day before the sectional tournament.
