Kyle Thompson’s first trip to the sectional tournament was a memorable one.
The Granite City junior earned his first state tournament berth after placing third in the 160-pound division of the Class 3A Bolingbrook Sectional on Feb. 13. Thompson was the lone Granite City wrestler to qualify for state.
The effort earned Thompson this week’s Granite City AdVantage News Athlete of the Week award.
Last year, Thompson came up one place short of going to sectionals as he placed fourth at 160 in the Belleville West Regional. On Feb. 6, Thompson cleared the regional hurdle by placing first at 160.
At sectionals, Thompson defeated Plainfield South’s Adrian Cervantes 5-1 in the third-place match. He beat Cervantes 4-2 in the quarterfinals.
Thompson, who was one of three Granite City sectional qualifiers, earned a trip to the third-place match by beating Josh Bush of Moline 9-7 in the consolation semifinals that clinched him a trip to Champaign.
At the 3A state tournament, Thompson ended up going 1-2, a win short of the medal round. He lost his opening match, but got a second chance in the wrestlebacks where he bested Cam Hayes of Naperville Central 4-3. Unfortunately, Thompson dropped an 8-4 decision to Wheaton North’s Devin Donovan in the next round to end his season.
Thompson finished the campaign with a 40-13 mark. He also won a title at 160 at the Granite City Holiday Tournament earlier this season.
