Wilyonde Bell picked up another medal on Dec. 29.
The Granite City senior placed third in the William “Red” Schmitt Holiday Wrestling Tournament by beating Staley’s Tyler Craig 6-4 in the overtime period of the third-place match of the 145-pound division at Memorial Gymnasium. Bell placed at the Granite City tournament for the first time.
The performance earned Bell this week’s AdVantage News Athlete of the Week award.
A week before the Granite City tournament, Bell turned in Granite City’s highest finish at the Kansas City Stampede, placing fifth at 145.
At the Granite City tournament, Bell won the third-place match by scoring a takedown with 44 seconds left in the overtime period.
“Will is such a good athlete,” Granite City coach George Kirgan said. “When he figures out the coachable part and the work hard part, there’s no stopping him.”
Entering this week Bell was an honorable mention at 145 pounds, according to the state rankings at www.illinoismatmen.com.
