Hockey | Riley Brown
Brown was pretty thrilled after his Granite City hockey team pulled off its first win of the season on Nov. 9 against East Alton-Wood River.
“It was a big turnaround in attitude,” the Granite City junior said. “I hope it keeps going throughout the season.”
Brown helped the Warriors pull off an 8-6 win over the Oilers at the East Alton Ice Arena by scoring two goals; both of them were in the second period. The effort earned Brown this week’s Granite City AdVantage News Athlete of the Week award.
Brown gave the Warriors a 1-0 lead with his first goal of the season with under a minute into the second period. His second goal with 9:16 left in the second extended Granite City’s lead to 3-0.
“When I got the first goal, it pumped us up,” Brown said.
The Warriors lost their first two games against Alton and Highland before pulling off the win over EA-WR. A year ago, Granite City won just one game and was outscored 15-3 by the Oilers in the two meetings.
Brown has high expectations of his team this year.
“Hopefully, we’ll be above .500,” Brown said.
Brown has been playing with the Granite City hockey program since the eighth grade. Last year, he scored three goals.
