Volleyball | Haley Jones
Even though her four-year high school volleyball career is over, Jones plans to come out and support the Granite City Warriors volleyball team next year.
“I’m for sure going to come out to tryouts and practices and help out as much as I can,” the Granite City senior said. “I love volleyball. It’s my favorite sport.”
Jones was one of the Warriors’ top setters this year, finishing with a team-high 131 assists.
On Oct. 19, Jones turned in a strong performance in the Warriors’ Senior Night match against Madison, finishing with a team-high 15 assists to help her team pull off a two-game win. The effort earned Jones this week’s Granite City AdVantage News Athlete of the Week award.
Jones was one of four seniors on the GCHS squad this year. Her high school volleyball career came to an end on Oct. 26, when the Warriors lost to Quincy in two games in a first-round match of the Class 4A Granite City Regional.
“I’ve been playing it (volleyball) since sixth grade,” Jones said. “It’s really heartbreaking to end it all tonight. I’d hoped we would go farther, but we left it out there on the court. I’m happy and I’m proud of my team.”
Jones said her team will have a solid 2016 season despite losing four players to graduation, including herself.
“They’ll do great,” Jones said. “I believe in them.”
