Golf | Megan Keel
Keel accomplished some history on Oct. 5 at the Class AA Edwardsville Regional girls’ golf tournament at Oak Brook Golf Course.
Keel, a junior, became the first Granite City golfer to qualify for the sectional tournament for the third year in a row after shooting a 91 in regionals. She shot six pars and fired a birdie on the No. 9 hole to earn a trip to the Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin Sectional at Illini Country Club in Springfield.
“It’s good,” said Keel, the Warriors’ lone sectional qualifier. “I think it shows people that anyone can do it and you’ve just got to try hard.”
The performance earned Keel this week’s Granite City AdVantage News Athlete of the Week award.
Keel also played at sectionals in her freshman and sophomore seasons. She’s one of just six Granite City golfers in program history who competed in the sectional round of the postseason.
Keel has been the Warriors’ top golfer for most of the season, shooting under 50 in seven dual matches and helping the team finish with a 7-5 record.
