Megan Keel | Golf
Granite City sophomore Megan Keel accomplished some history on Oct. 7.
Keel became the first Granite City girls’ golfer to qualify for the sectional tournament for the second year in a row after finishing with a career-best 87 in the Class AA O’Fallon Regional at Tamarack Golf Course in Shiloh.
Keel finished in a four-way tie for eighth out of 60 golfers in regionals and was the lone Granite City golfer to qualify for sectionals.
The effort earned Keel this week’s Granite City AdVantage News Athlete of the Week award.
Keel then came within six spots of qualifying for the state tournament after shooting a 91 in the Class AA Normal Sectional at Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University. She finished 23rd out of 111 golfers there.
Keel completed her second season with the Granite City girls’ golf team. A year ago, she qualified for sectionals by shooting a 100 at the Class AA Carbondale Regional and earned third-team all-Southwestern Conference honors.
This fall, Keel helped the Warriors finish 10-4, their first winning record in program history.
