Cross Country | Alyssa Comer
Comer was all smiles after placing 20th at the Southwestern Conference girls’ cross country championship meet Oct. 16 at Belleville West.
The Granite City sophomore earned all-conference honors for the first time. The top 21 runners at the conference meet earn all-league honors.
“I never got all-conference, so I’m excited about it,” Comer said.
Comer finished with a time of 20 minutes, 47 seconds, which was 12 seconds shy from her season-best time. She was the only Granite City runner to earn an all-league award at the SWC girls’ meet. The effort earned Comer this week’s Granite City AdVantage News Athlete of the Week award.
Comer is competing in her second season with the Granite City girls’ cross country team. Last year, she came five places short of earning all-conference honors as she finished 27th at the league meet.
“I was upset because I felt I could have run a little faster,” Comer said.
This year, Comer was one of three Granite City runners who earned all-conference honors. The others were brothers Will and Andrew O’Keefe. Will placed first and Andrew finished seventh in the boys’ race.
Comer also led the GCHS girls at the Class 3A Edwardsville Regional at SIUE on Oct. 24. She ran a time of 22:11.62, qualifying for the Normal Sectional Saturday.
