Cross Country | Andrew O’Keefe
Andrew O’Keefe’s freshman season with the Granite City cross country team is off to a sizzling start.
O’Keefe has competed in three races and earned medals in all of them, including first-place finishes in the Tiger Classic in Edwardsville and the Belleville West Invitational last week.
O’Keefe won his first varsity race after placing first in the Tiger Classic with a time of 16 minutes, 55 seconds at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville on Sept. 9. He beat O’Fallon’s Joey Black by two seconds to win the title.
Three days later, the Granite City freshman won the Belleville West Invitational with a 16:04 and beat Mascoutah’s Daniel Pearson by three seconds.
The strong efforts at Edwardsville and Belleville West earned O’Keefe this week’s Granite City AdVantage Athlete of the Week award.
O’Keefe, who is the younger brother of junior Will O’Keefe, started his freshman season Sept. 5 with an 11th-place finish at the Granite City Invitational.
“I expect great things from him now,” coach Richie Skirball said.
“I’m just trying to allow him to be a freshman and grow, but he shows time and time again that he wants to continue stepping up.”
