Baseball | Jacob Kanallakan
Kanallakan is a senior first baseman for the Alton Redbird baseball team and a key cog in the offense.
An All-Southwestern Conference performer as a junior for the Birds, Kanallakan earns AdVantage News Athlete of the Week honors after etching his name into Alton baseball history on April 12.
Playing in the first game at the new AHS field, Kanallakan deposited a 3-1 Collinsville pitch over the center field fence in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Redbirds a walk-off 2-1 victory.
“I wasn’t trying for a home run; I know that,” a smiling Kanallakan said after the win. “I was just trying to get something started because we only needed one run.”
Entering this week, Kanallakan was hitting .392 with 1 homer, 5 doubles and 17 RBIs.
Baseball | Zach Weinman
Weinman, a junior shortstop for the Marquette Catholic Explorers, earns AdVantage News Athlete of the Week honors after driving in the decisive run in a 4-3 win in eight innings over the rival Civic Memorial Eagles on April 12.
The extra-inning victory sparked the first of three wins for the Explorers last week.
Weinman was 3-for-3 vs. the Eagles and drove in 2 runs, including the go-ahead one in the eighth inning.
“I was just trying to put the ball in play and get the run home,” Weinman said after the win over CM. “All I wanted to do was to get on base.”
Marquette head coach Tim Fahnestock added, “Zach is a good contact hitter and he’s usually at the top of the lineup, but I dropped him to No. 8 today and moved Jayce Maag to No. 1 to shake up things. I was trying to find the right mix and trying to get Zach to relax. He really responded and did a great job.”
