Nick Messinger | Golf
Messinger entered his senior year this week at Marquette Catholic High School, where he is a key member of the boys’ golf squad.
He wrapped up his summer on the links in fine fashion, helping earn him AdVantage News Athlete of the Week honors.
On July 30-31, Messinger won the 16-18 boys’ division of the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour event at Spencer T. Olin Golf Course in Alton. He carded a two-day score of 146, cruising to the 16-18 division championship by eight strokes.
Messinger shot a 2-over 74 on the first day, which included five birdies. He led by two strokes following the first day of competition. On Day 2, he shot an even-par 72 and collected three more birdies.
He finished the 36-hole tournament with 8 birdies and 20 pars.
Messinger will look to help the Explorers build on their seventh-place finish at the Class 2A state tournament last year in his final prep campaign.
Matthew Daniel | Swimming
A junior at Alton High School, Daniel enjoyed a stellar performance at the Futures Championships from Aug. 4-7 at the University of Texas in Austin.
Daniel turned in a personal best in the 100-meter freestyle and picked up a top-25 finish in the 200-meter butterfly competing for the Tri-City Area Tidalwaves.
His superb showing earned him AdVantage News Athlete of the Week.
Daniel finished the 100 freestyle in 53.63 seconds during the preliminaries, his best time in the event. Unfortunately, he didn’t advance to the finals.
His time of 2:10.99 in the preliminaries of the 200 butterfly was good enough to earn 24th place and qualify in the finals of that event. He went on to swim a 2:11.33 in the finals of the 200 butterfly, which was good enough for 23rd place overall.
The Redbirds don’t compete with a regular season schedule in the IHSA, but do participate in sectional and state competitions. Daniel will be swimming for them for his third season.
