Michael Holtz | Golf
Holtz, a senior for the Marquette Catholic Explorer boys’ golf team, kicked off his final prep campaign in fine fashion.
On Aug. 16, Holtz finished second individually at the Alton Tee-Off Classic at Spencer T. Olin Golf Course. He fired a 72, which helped the Explorers secure the team title. They shot 298 as a team to outdistance Edwardsville (302).
Holtz had 11 pars and four birdies at the Alton Tee-Off Classic.
He followed that up by carding a 71 at the Madison County Tournament to share the small-school division individual title and tied for second overall. The Explorers turned in a 293 to successfully defend their small-school MadCo crown. They tied EHS, which also shot 293 and was the large-school division winner, for best overall.
“I hope this is a preview of what could be for us this season,” Holtz said of the Explorers. “It’s a confidence-booster for us to start the season this way. Everybody is playing well right now.”
Kaleb Bassett | Soccer
Bassett is a junior transfer to Civic Memorial from Belleville West.
He got a great start to his Eagle career on Aug. 22 during a 7-0 blanking of rival Roxana at the Bethalto Sports Complex.
Bassett scored on a rifle shot just 1 minute, 59 seconds into his first CM game. He tacked on a second goal in the 10th minute of the game to set the stage for the lopsided affair.
Bassett is the son of former CM standout Roshan Bassett and Alton star Lindsay Kennedy-Eversmeyer.
“Kaleb really wants to fit in here and he plays well with these guys,” Derek Jarman said. “He wants to change the culture here. He’s a game-changer.”
Bassett said, “I thought we played very well. We had some good passes, good moments and we capitalized on things. And it was an amazing feeling for me to be out on the pitch again.”
