Ben Mossman | Baseball
Even an injured back didn’t slow down Alton Post 126 center fielder Ben Mossman at the Junior American Legion State Tournament last week at Forsyth Park.
“I hurt my back in the Division (22) Tournament and I didn’t want to say anything to let my team down,” Mossman said.
Mossman, who will be a junior at Alton High this fall, was one of the key performers in Alton’s second-place finish at state. He delivered a key bases-loaded double against Danville in the loser’s bracket final to help Alton win 5-2 and advance to the championship game against Moline.
The effort earned the 16-year-old Mossman this week’s AdVantage News Athlete of the Week award.
“I came up at a 3-0 count and he just threw me my pitch and I drove it to right field and it dropped,” Mossman said. “At that point, my back was killing me. I got to second and once I got to second, I had to be taken out of the game because I couldn’t move. My back hurt so much.”
Alton manager Dennis Sharp said he was pleased with Mossman’s performance despite playing hurt.
“He had so much heart,” he said.
