Wrestling | Drew Sobol
Sobol is a junior wrestler for the East Alton-Wood River Oilers and showed his prowess on the mat on Dec. 5 at the Civic Memorial Tournament in Bethalto.
Sobol won the championship at 106 pounds and his overall performance spurred him to garner co-Outstanding Wrestler honors for the tournament. He shared the best-of-the-best award with Ronald Stewart of Maplewood-Richmond Heights.
“It was really cool,” Sobol said of the co-Outstanding Wrestler award. “First time ever, so I was really excited about it.”
Sobol’s title run came via a first-round bye, a pair of pins and a 9-6 decision over Trevor Edwards in the championship bout. Sobol is now 8-0 on the young season.
As for the Oilers, they compiled 130.5 points to finish fifth overall in the tournament as a team.
Bowling | Ashley Heistand
Heistand of the Alton Redbirds enjoyed a tremendous performance at the 8th Annual Abe Lincoln Invitational in Springfield on Dec. 5.
Heistand won the girls’ division of the tournament, which included 14 teams on the girls’ side and 12 teams on the boys’ side.
She accumulated a total of 1,293 pins and had an average of 215.5 for the tournament. Heistand narrowly outshot Redbird teammate Eryka Graham, who finished second in the tournament with a 214 average and a total of 1,284 pins.
Heistand’s championship performance helped lead the Birds to third place overall in the team standings. As a squad, Alton was just 133 pins behind champion Collinsville and 13 pins behind second-place O’Fallon. The individual average for the Birds was 186.6 for the lineup.
